Guidelines on 'How to do Therapy, Counselling & Coaching'

Many people who come to see me ask me how to ‘do therapy, counselling or life coaching' and what the ‘rules’ are. I usually respond with something like – “Whilst humanity is our ‘glue’, each person is an individual so how one person talks about an issue may be different to another, and it is those differences that make us who we are”. Some people are introvert, some extrovert and so on – so there is no one way to ‘do therapy, counselling or coaching’.

A psychotherapeutic relationship is unique. However, it is also similar to other relationships in your life – in that it deserves the common courtesies you would extend to anyone. So I do have some guidelines as to how the first few sessions run.

In the first session, I take a few details such as telephone number, address etc and after that it will be mainly exploratory to find out what has brought you in to see me. Upon agreement to work together, we agree a length of time or undertake on-going work.

In the second session, I take a full case history to help me have a wider understanding to help you. In the sixth session we undertake a review.

There are some slight changes with respect to pure CBT, NLP, EFT, Havening or Hypnosis. During the first session - again it will be mainly exploratory to establish whether these options are appropriate.

In the second session for CBT a full questionnaire will be given to the client to complete which will then lead onto a particular course of exercises which will be discussed at the time. The sessions will then continue for a minimum of 4 weeks - upon which a review will take place to establish the next course of action.

In the second session for NLP, EFT, Havening a discussion will happen with respect to the best course of action needed to assist the client to change their thinking, behaviour and to release energy blocks. The sessions will continue for a minimum of 4 weeks - upon which a review will take place to establish the next course of action.

In the second session for Hypnosis a discussion will happen with respect to the best course of hypnosis needed to assist the client to change their thinking and behaviour. The sessions will then continue for a minimum of 4 weeks - upon which a review will take place to establish the next course of action.

In on-going therapy - a four session notice period is required as endings are as important as beginnings and bring up their own issues. They frequently remind us of other endings in our lives – no matter what the experience has been. Whilst we will be gathering new insights throughout the sessions – teachings, learnings, and healings – endings also allow the opportunity to consciously gather and bring a healthy closure to an important journey – tying up loose ends.

Your personal development is a serious business....it's about making fundamental changes in the way you think and live your life, relate to those around you and to the world. Significant changes usually require hard work and commitment, but the rewards can be huge. Although personal development can be painstaking at times, the struggle is often balanced with joy, happiness and laughter and self empowerment.

I trust this gives a 'flavour' of how the first few sessions run. For Terms & Conditions please see the 'Fees' tab.
